Brief Agricultural History of Australia
"European farms developed soon after British colonization and European settlement in Australia. Three months after the arrival of the First Fleet in January 1788, the livestock in the colony consisted of seven horses, seven cattle, 29 sheep, 74 pigs, five rabbits, 18 turkeys, 29 geese, 35 ducks, and 209 fowls" (Wells, 2013).
Historically Australia is known for it's farming and exporting agriculture products, something they have been affective in since the 1840's. Agriculture being their number one economical growth and export, the needs of agriculture change. From the 1840' to roughly 1950's, Australia economically benefited most off of their production of sheep for wool. The past agriculture of Australia created a large workforce, growing industries and need of port cities for exportation. After the 1950's there was a decline in work force to almost one third of the past till what they today. As the workforce declined so did the value of sheep. Values had changed from wool being the highest value to cattle, wheat, dairy, vegetables, fruits, nuts then Lamb meat and wool. Switching the value concepts of past economy growing agriculture to today.
Australian farmers faced ,any challenges over the past couple hundred years, droughts, clearing, water reduction and other issues, much of which were adaptable in the use of developing technologies and mechanisms. Machines also replaced much of the agriculture workforce, needs of less labor, more production and growing multiple industries.
